Link Two Houses Wirelessly

Q: I was looking to setup a wireless network across 2 houses.

The houses are seperated by 90-100m with LOS from both roof tops. 1 house has a 2 way satelite connection

I was thinking 3 routers

  • 1 using uplink to the modem, and running the wireless in one housesecond one connected to first with long range directional antenna pointing to house 2
  • 3rd one in 2nd house with long range antenna pointing back to first house
  • house 2 doesnt need wireless, as it only has 1 computer

If there is a better way to set it up im happy to be given advice.

A: At only 100m apart (I am assuming that the ‘900’ is a typo?) it is not impossible that you might be able to get away with just two devices.  With a high gain antenna and wireless client like the DuxClient 2.4GHz CPE, you may be able to connect to an indoor AP if it is located in a suitable position (say inside the ceiling/roof cavity of the first house.  A device like the duxmaster indoor gateway with a high power wifi adapter and outdoor antenna will generally cover most of an average house with wireless signal.

At the same time, with only 100m to the other house, a DuxClient CPE mounted externally to the roof at that end will probably get a good link pack to the main location.

For the house with the sat broadband system, you would need:

RouterBoard 411AR: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=82

Indoor case: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=29&products_id=55

MMCX Pigtail: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=98

nMale patch cable: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=69

8dBi antenna: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=39

Power Supply: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=33

PoE adapter: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=74

At the other end, you would need:

DuxClient 2.4GHz CPE: http://shop.duxtel.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=47

In the event that the CPE can not get a good signal to the ceiling mounted AP (unlikely, but not impossible) then you can simply add a second DuxClient system and configure the two of them as a point to point transparent bridge.

I hope that helps answer some of your questions – if you have further questions or require clarification on any of this info, feel free to ask!
