Use Netinstall to un-brick MikroTik Routers

From time to time, a Mikrotik router may fail to properly boot to a stable operation due to configuration problem or NVRAM corruption. This can be remedied by a reset and upgrade of routerOS software using the Netinstall utility.

The procedure is as follows:

1.     Download to your computer the latest RouterOS version  from http://www.mikrotik.com/download

2.     From the same site, download to your computer both the Netinstall utility and the Winbox configuration utility.

3.     Launch the Netinstall utility.

4.     If you are running Netinstall for the first time, you will need to set the boot settings once (otherwise you can skip this step). Click the Net booting button:

Then tick the Boot Server enabled option and set an IP address that is on the same subnet as your PC. The Netinstall server will issue this IP address to routers that are booting from it.

In the example below, Netinstall will issue an address of 192.168.11.101 to devices booting from it:

****IMPORTANT: the PC running netinstall MUST have an IP address and /24 netmask on the same subnet as the address entered above!

5.     Directly connect your computer with an ethernet cable to the "boot interface" (typically "ether1") on the router.

6.     Starting with the router powered OFF, press, and HOLD the 'reset button' on the router.

7.     After applying the power while still holding the 'reset button', continue holding until either 10-20 seconds have passed or the first 'intial beep' has sounded.

8.     In approximately 1 minute, you should see the MAC address of your router appear in the Netinstall window:

9.     In Netinstall, click the Browse button to locate and select the RouterOS file that you downloaded in step 1 above. Then click the Install button.

10.   NetInstall will now reset the router and a progress bar will display. When that process is complete, a Reboot button will appear - click that button.

After your router reboots, it will have routerOS version 6.4 loaded on it. It should now also present a (disabled) wireless interface. You can enable the wireless by again establishing a Winbox session to the router (see step 6 above), selecting Interfaces from the Winbox menu, right-clicking the “WLAN1” interface and selecting enable.
